Curriculum
StartUpRoots, R.A. ("SUR") is dedicated to addressing social, economic, and environmental issues through its curriculum. Working closely with schools, SUR strives to meet the criteria set forth by the Ministries of Environmental Protection and Education for green school certification. The SUR project involves at least one community other than the school's students and staff members, and includes economic planning for continued operation for at least one year. The project generates revenue or economic savings for the school or target audience, while also helping reduce the use of resources and environmental damage. In addition, it has a lasting impact on the promotion of environmental-pedagogical values in the school's program. The interdisciplinary, experiential, and authentic SUR curriculum aims to engage students in science and technology, develop 21st-century skills, and inspire lifelong learning and a sense of responsibility. The hydroponic farm and teacher training enable teachers to use the farm as a platform for additional lessons, making the curriculum fully customizable, scalable, and adaptable for middle school through high school classes.
Hydroponic Science
Hydroponic science is an innovative approach to teaching biology, botany. By growing plants in a soil-free environment using nutrient-rich water, students can gain a hands-on understanding of plant growth, photosynthesis, and nutrient cycles. This approach also offers a unique opportunity to explore the impacts of environmental factors on plant growth, such as light, temperature, and pH. Through hydroponic science, students can develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while learning about sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation. By aligning with Ministry of Education standards, hydroponic science can enhance students' learning experiences, prepare them for success in the 21st century, and fulfill government requirements.
Sustainable Entrepreneurship
Sustainable entrepreneurship rooted in Jewish tradition offers a unique learning experience for students to develop entrepreneurial thinking and understanding of basic business operations and practices. Through running a hydroponic produce business that focuses on growing leafy greens, herbs, and microgreens, students can gain practical knowledge of pricing, market research, and budgeting, while also learning about ethical business practices and Jewish laws related to food production, distribution, and consumption. This approach not only equips students with essential business skills but also fosters a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainability and social responsibility. By engaging with Jewish traditions, students can explore the values of tikkun olam and bal tashchit, which emphasize repairing the world and minimizing waste, respectively. Through this multidisciplinary approach, students can develop an entrepreneurial mindset while also learning to operate a business in a socially and environmentally responsible way, preparing them to become leaders in the 21st century.
